Syllabus for Students and Parents:
The learning outcomes are specifically posted at the beginning of each unit along with the specific student learning tasks required.Â
Introduction:
The materials being used to deliver the science program, Science In Action (use as main resource), have been approved by the Alberta Government. There are instructions in some of the lessons for an alternate textbook called Science Focus. We will not be using that textbook this year and you do not need a copy of it.
Assessment:
For evaluation, students will have assignments and quizzes. The assignments are all formative assessment (Assessment for Learning - AFL) and are meant to help student check their understanding and demonstrate their knowledge. Most of them have answer keys provided for students to self-check after they complete their work. Summative assessments (Assessment of Learning - AOL) in this course are the weekly quizzes, unit projects, and unit tests. The weekly quizzes are shorter and are worth a smaller portion of the student's grade. Unit projects entail full-scale research and scientific inquiry and should be worked on throughout the length of the study of the unit. Unit tests are inclusive of all the material studied in that unit. There are two summative major cumulative tests: a midterm exam and a final exam (both AOL). Students work on the online course or use the physical textbook in order to facilitate student learning of the Learning Outcomes for the math unit.
It is important to encourage students and parents to modify the program to meet student needs. For example, a student having difficulty should put more time into completing all of the AFL assignments for that unit. However, once a concept is mastered the student should move on and not complete endless repetition of a concept. If a student needs more practice ask him/her to complete extra questions provided in the textbook. All students should have a science notebook (scribbler or binder) to help them solve questions and to keep track of notes, examples, full solutions, and corrections.
Getting Support:
If the student is having difficulties understanding any concept, it is very important to get some help as soon as possible. Parents may be able to help, students can put questions in the Science Forum (at the top of the course) to get help from fellow students, or they can contact their teacher through Open Office, phone, or email.
Marks Used for Final Year End Science Mark:
In Science 7 students will be completing the following 5 units. The final mark for this course will be calculated using the following weighting.
