Unit 4 was all about decision making for daily living—how mathematics can help you make consumer and career choices.
In the first part of Unit 4 you explored unit prices, an important tool for making informed decisions in the marketplace. Making good decision will stretch your consumer dollar. You also investigated relationships between how much a store pays for items and how much you pay for items. Cost price, sale price, mark-up, and discount were among the basic concepts you examined.
As well, you compared prices in Canadian dollars to their equivalent prices in foreign currencies. Currency conversion is important when you travel and when you sell or buy goods beyond Canada’s borders.
In the second part of Unit 4, you explored earning money on the job. You looked at various ways of being paid. These included wages, salaries, tips, commissions, piecework, custom work, contracts, and self-employment.
In addition, you looked at the bottom line—how you can assess what you take home in pay after all paycheque deductions are taken into account. Included among these deductions were income taxes, Canada Pension Plan contributions, and Employment Insurance premiums.
You brought together everything you learned in the Unit 4 Project. In the Unit 4 Project you identified and explored the details of an occupation or a career in which you are interested. You even interviewed someone who works in the career or occupation you identified. Have you checked to make sure you completed all the requirements for your Unit 4 Project presentation?
Contact your teacher to confirm that you have completed all the requirements for your Unit 4 Project, for Unit 4 as a whole, and for the Mathematics 10-3 course.
Good luck!
