Can you identify the milestones represented in the photo collage? A lot of planning and money was required to reach each milestone. The young college graduate may have had to work part-time in order to finance her post-secondary education. The couple dancing on the beach most likely saved and invested their money during their working years in order to live happily ever after in retirement.
In this module you investigated the following questions:
- How can an understanding of sequences and series help you to manage your finances wisely?
- How are mathematical formulas derived?
You learned about different types of sequences and their corresponding series in the context of managing your finances. Arithmetic sequences and series can be used to determine job earnings and help predict future income.
You learned about the power of compound interest and how compound interest relates to geometric sequences. This knowledge can give you an edge in your investment strategy. You also learned about perpetuities, an application of geometric series that can help you save enough for your retirement. These and other applications of sequences and series helped you understand how to better manage your hard-earned money.
Throughout Module 1 you encountered formulas. Often you either derived or used a mathematical formula to evaluate sequences and series. You learned multiple ways of deriving these precise statements about the relationships between variables.
In many cases you derived a formula by generalizing from a specific example. In other cases you derived a formula by building from a previously established formula. The methods you learned for working with formulas will help you as you continue your studies in mathematics.
