Lesson 3.1: Natural Sources of Thermal Energy

The Earth is a natural source of thermal energy. We see this when volcanoes erupt, geysers spew hot water, and thermal hot springs form.

The Sun is also a natural source of thermal energy. It can be used to actively or passively heat our homes and offices. With solar power collectors it can even power our homes.

Thermal energy can also be generated by taping into natural renewable resources such as wind energy and hydropower. Wind energy could be developed by using the power of the chinook winds that prevail in southern Alberta. The winds would be harnessed by using large fields of windmills. Solar power could be harnessed again on the prairies especially during the summer months when the temperatures are intense. Hydropower could be developed by using the waves coming towards the beaches on the west and eastern coasts of Canada.
