Module 5: Lesson 4 Assignment
You will use the following lab to complete parts of your Module 5: Lesson 4 Assignment. Retrieve your saved copy of the assignment from your course folder now.
Lab: Serial Dilution of Acids
You have used calculations to predict the expected change to the pH of an acidic solution by dilution. To determine whether these changes occur, you will watch the “Serial Dilution of Acids” video.
Open the video. Located on the left side of the screen, select the “Inquiry” video mode button and set the Toggle Timecode to “On.”

Problem
Can the pH of an acidic solution undergoing dilution be predicted?
Part 1: The Technique of Serial Dilutions (00:00 to 04:50)
Watch the first 4 minutes 50 seconds of the video. During the video, questions will be posed by the narrator. To check your answers to these questions, select the “Explanatory” mode button and review the section to hear the answer. Further explanation can be obtained by selecting the “Explanatory Transcript” option.
Answer the questions in Part 1 of the Module 5: Lesson 4 Assignment.
Part 2: The Serial Dilution of HCl(aq) (04:50 to 07:55)
Prepare a table with three columns and five rows. Enter the heading “Solution Concentration” at the top of the first column; enter the heading “Predicted pH” at the top of the second column; and enter the heading “Measured pH” at the top of the third column. Save a copy of your data table to your course folder.
Watch the video from 04:50 to 07:55. Use the “Inquiry” and “Explanatory” features to view this segment to answer questions asked by the narrator. Record the data for the hydrochloric acid solutions shown on the video into the data table.
Answer the questions in Part 2 of the Module 5: Lesson 4 Assignment.
Part 3: The Dilution of CH3COOH(aq) (07:55 to 08:55)
Prepare a table with three columns and five rows. Enter the heading “Solution Concentration” at the top of the first column; enter the heading “Predicted pH” at the top of the second column; and enter the heading “Measured pH” at the top of the third column. Save a copy of your data table to your course folder.
Watch the video from 07:55 to 08:55. Use the “Inquiry” and “Explanatory” features to view this segment to answer questions asked by the narrator. Record the data for the ethanoic acid solution shown on the video into the data table.
Answer the questions in Part 3 of the Module 5: Lesson 4 Assignment.
