Commercial Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid or ASA) is an ester of salicylic acid. It is one of the most commonly used drugs in the world. First Nations peoples also used salicylic acid for medicinal purposes—their sources, however, were natural (such as willow bark).
Today's commercial Aspirin uses modifications like esterification to provide pain relief with fewer negative side effects. The commercial Aspirin synthesis is accomplished using benzene as a reactant. The reactions for the commercial sysnthesis and for an alternative method are summarized in the following diagrams:
- Describe what happens in a substitution reaction. Identify a step in the processes shown in which a substitution reaction occurs.
- Provide the structural formula for the substance used to convert salicylic acid into Aspirin.
- From a greening perspective, give two advantages and one disadvantage of using the alternative method for synthesizing Aspirin.
Use the scoring guide provided to plan your responses and to review your work before submitting it to your teacher.

Score | Scoring Description |
5 Excellent |
The student demonstrates an excellent understanding of all the components of the question and fully and correctly supports those components. Statements made in the response are organized, unambiguous, and supported explicitly but may contain a minor error or have minor omissions. |
4 Good |
The student demonstrates a good understanding of all the components of the question and fully and adequately supports those components. Statements made in the response are unambiguous, mostly complete, and mostly correct but may contain errors. |
3 Satisfactory |
The student demonstrates a basic understanding of the components of the question. Statements made in the response may be disorganized, ambiguous, incomplete, and may lack support. |
2 Limited |
The student demonstrates a limited understanding of the components of the question. Statements made in the response lack details, clarity, and support. |
1 Poor |
The student provides a solution that contains a relevant statement that begins to answer the question. |
0 Insufficient |
The response is incorrect and/or totally off topic. |
