Session Summary
Important: The quiz may contain questions that go beyond points highlighted in this summary. Be sure to review the session thoroughly.
Review Session 2 to prepare for writing the quiz. As you review, note the sections that connect with the following points:
- Communication involves a sender, a message, and a receiver. The receiver of the message becomes the sender of the next message.
- Messages usually contain content and feelings and are delivered verbally and non-verbally.
- Culture plays an important role in communication. Good communicators try to understand the other person’s perspective.
- When a person is really listened to, they feel valued and cared for. You show you are listening by nodding your head, making eye contact, asking questions, and leaning toward the speaker.
- Four stages of listening include selecting, attending, understanding, and remembering.
- Active listening involves responding to another person in a way that lets the person know the message is being understood and valued.
- The process of active listening involves understanding the content (the idea or opinion) and the feeling, and then naming the feeling in a tentative way that allows the child to correct you if you have not understood correctly.
- Watching a child’s body language helps you understand the child’s feelings.
- The child care provider can promote active listening by being approachable and accessible, paying attention to the child’s non-verbal and verbal messages, naming the feeling, and giving the child time and encouragement to respond.
- Being aware of cultural differences in communication styles will help you communicate with the child more effectively.
