Session 3: Observing Young Children

Session 3 focuses on the importance of observing children by collecting descriptive information about, and keeping records of, children in their natural play settings. Through relevant observation of children, child care providers can plan appropriate learning experiences and effectively guide children’s behaviour.
You will learn more about guiding children’s behaviour in Session 4.
Getting Focused Activity: What Do You See?
Focus
Have you ever wondered why a child does the following things?
- plays with the same toy at the same time every day
- reacts angrily to failure
- has difficulty playing with other children
- gets frustrated when learning new activities
Child care providers can acquire detailed information about children by observing behaviours, examining situations, and developing ideas about possible connections and solutions. The scenarios in this activity demonstrate the importance of observing children.
