Session Summary

Important: The quiz may contain questions beyond points highlighted in this summary. Be sure to review the session thoroughly.

Review Session 4 to prepare for writing the quiz. As you review, note the sections that connect with the following points:

  • It is important to guide children rather than punish them. Children in child care centres need to be physically and emotionally safe at all times. Child care providers find constructive ways to prevent problems from occurring, and they intervene in a positive way if inappropriate behaviour does occur. Child care providers aim to increase children’s sense of self-control and self-esteem.

  • Warm and nurturing child care providers tend to encourage co-operative behaviour in children. A thoughtfully managed, child-centred environment can prevent problem behaviours from occurring.

  • Guidelines can be used to help children act in appropriate ways. To be effective, a guideline should prevent children from hurting themselves, hurting others, or destroying property. Guidelines should be stated to children in positive ways, and the reasons for each guideline should be given. Remember that too many guidelines can stifle children and lead them to behave in inappropriate and destructive ways.

  • Child care providers should watch children’s play for warning signs that problems are about to occur. By intervening and redirecting the play, providers may help avoid hurtful behaviour. If conflicts do arise, child care providers can guide children in finding alternative, acceptable solutions. When children are involved in resolving their own problems, they grow in responsibility and independence. They are also more likely to comply with the proposed solutions to a problem.

  • It is important to step back from your feelings when you think children are behaving inappropriately. Child care providers need to understand children’s needs and to find nurturing ways to manage difficult situations while at the same time contributing to each child’s growth and development
