Course Glossary
active listening: responding to another person in a way that communicates that the sender’s message is being heard and understood
assumption: something taken for granted or accepted as true without proof
discipline: generally refers to the action the adult takes after inappropriate behaviour has occurred
empathy: the ability to identify with children, parents, and other team members
guidelines: the rules in a child care centre that keep children physically and emotionally safe and that help children learn to care for others and for property
guiding: helping children learn appropriate social behaviour, such as self-control
inferences: conclusions based on facts gathered from observations
inflection: a change in the pitch or tone of the voice
intervention: techniques child care providers apply to help a child learn a more appropriate behaviour when a situation arises
Child care providers choose a suitable intervention method for the child and the situation. For example, providers might use redirection (directing toward a logical consequence), or they might help a child learn to problem solve.
prejudice: an adverse judgment or opinion formed without knowledge or examination of the facts
prevention: actions taken by child care providers to help stop inappropriate behaviour or problems from happening before they occur
primary role: a role in which a person is directly and actively engaged in the supervision, safety, well-being, and development of children
protocol: rules or expectations for appropriate behaviour
punishment: controlling behaviour through fear
support role: a role in which a person is not considered to be directly responsible for the care and supervision of children
