Course Glossary
alpha character: an alphabetical letter key on a keyboard
alphanumeric keypad: the keypad used for typing text; has keys for all of the letters of the alphabet and punctuation keys
anchoring: keeping at least one finger touching or raised slightly above its position in home row so that the fingers do not lose their proper keyboarding position
ergonomics: the applied science of equipment design, as for the workplace, intended to maximize productivity by reducing operator fatigue and discomfort
home row: eight keys (A, S, D, F, J, K, L, and ;) located in the centre row of the alphanumeric keypad; the base or home from which all other keys are reached
keyboarding: a term synonymous with touch typing
QWERTY: a keyboard having the standard arrangement of keys on the alphanumeric keypad; the first five letters in the third row
service key: any key that does not type a character
shift key: one of several service keys that makes uppercase letters and allows characters from the top row to be typed
touch typing: typing without having to look at the keys
