“The only characters I ever don't like are ones that leave no impression on me. And I don't write characters that leave no impression on me.” ― Lauren DeStefano

As you prepare for Part A of your ELA 30-1 diploma exam, you need to think about characters you have encountered in this course about whom you could write.  The Critical/Analytical Response to Literary Text Assignment on Part A of your diploma exam requires you to craft a thesis statement and write about an individual in support and development of that thesis statement.

Lesson

As we have progressed through this course, we have looked at how literature reflects the human condition.  We have considered the nature of motivations that direct an individual's course of action. We have considered the role kindness plays when individuals attempt to determine their own destiny. We have also considered the role of honesty when an individual experiences tension between optimism and reality.

As you considered these questions, you considered the characters in a wide variety of texts. Which texts and characters left the greatest impressions on you?

Review the texts studied - shorts stories, plays, novel, film - and choose at least one character from each unit that you would feel confident on whom to write.

There are four steps to complete.

  • Step 1: Choose four different characters from throughout the course.  Aim for at least one character from each of units Two, Three, and Four: four different texts in total.  (Do not choose two characters from the same text.) Find a graphic to illustrate each character.

  • Step 2:  Use the Previous Part A Questions document.  Choose ONE different question to ask EACH character you chose in Step 1.  DO NOT CHOOSE A QUESTION FROM PRIOR TO 2003. DO NOT CHOOSE A QUESTION THAT WAS USED IN UNITS 2, 3, or 4. Each character will be asked a different question.

  • Step 3: Create a PPT of at least EIGHT slides which will illustrate your characters - one image and question per character and a second slide explaining your choices per character.
    • Slide One - character and question asked
    • Slide Two - deconstruction of character and question asked
    • Slide Three - character and question asked
    • Slide Four - deconstruction of character and question
    • Slide Five - character and question asked
    • Slide Six - deconstruction of character and question
    • Slide Seven - character and question asked
    • Slide Eight - deconstruction of character and question
  • Step 4: Deconstruction. For EACH one of your chosen characters, answer the following:
    • Why did you ask this character this particular question?
    • How would this particular character answer this question?
    • Why did you choose this particular image to illustrate this character?

Conclusion

Preparing well for both parts of your ELA diploma exam may go a long way toward relieving any exam anxiety you are experiencing.
