Research Assignment for "The Lottery"

For this assignment you are going to do some research about unusual, entrenched cultural traditions and customs around the world. 

When researching, you should use search terms like:   unusual customs around the world/ unique traditions around the globe...

Then you can pair these search terms with the following traditions:

-marriage

-divorce

-birth

-death (funeral)

-food

-religious customs

-physical adornments

-rites of passage for coming of age

-other

There are many interesting customs out there, but you need to find one that has a lot of information for you to research.

Research Assignment

Part A:  Explain what the ceremony/custom you chose is about.  When did it begin?  Who practices it?  What is it?  Why is it practiced?  What is it's purpose/ meaning?  Where on earth is it practiced?

Part B:  Create a visual to represent the custom.  It can be a drawing, collage, video clip (that you created).  If you have an idea I haven't listed, please contact me.

Part C:  What are your personal beliefs about this custom?  Do you think it's a valuable part of the culture that practices it?  Do you think it should be stopped or continued?  Why?

Part D:  What is a custom or ceremony that you practice in your family, community, culture, group of friends, religion etc.?  Describe it and answer the following:

What does this custom/ceremony mean to you?

How do you feel about it (do you practice it because you want to or because you always have?)
