PERSONAL RESPONSE TO TEXT NOTES (adapted from Karen Nakaska RVVS)
The format of a personal response is similar to other written response. State your idea and then defend your idea with details from the text. Personal response topics are worded as follows:
What ideas and impressions does the text suggest to you? Consider the context and develop your response by referring to the text.
In your writing, you should:
- Select a prose form that is appropriate to the ideas you wish to express and that will enable you to effectively communicate to the reader.
- Discuss ideas and impressions that are meaningful
- Respond from a PERSONAL, CRITICAL, and/or CREATIVE perspective
- Consider how you can create a strong unifying effect
There are many formats you may choose from in order to convey your ideas and impressions but you may NOT use poetry.
Here are some examples of acceptable prose forms:
- Short essay
- Diary
- Newspaper article
- Editorial
- Short story
- Personal observation
- Letter
- Eulogy
- Interview
- Rebuttal
- Speech
- Anecdote
- Interior monologue
Here are the three different perspectives you may choose to write from:
PERSONAL- CRITICAL- CREATIVE
Choose your perspective, your prose form and the theme and ideas you want to express.
