Course Orientation
Introduction
Welcome to HCS3010: Workplace Safety Practices. You will learn about workplace safety principles and practices, hazard management, and legislation. This course is a prerequisite for the Registered Apprenticeship Program and any off-campus experience.
HCS3010 is worth one credit and generally takes students between 17 and 25 hours to complete, though that time varies depending on the student.
Before You Begin
This course requires access to a materials work centre and to instruction from a person with specialized training in work-site and/or work-station safety.
Prerequisite Course Requirements
This course requires prior completion of HCS3000: Workplace Safety Systems.
Guiding Questions
Keep these question in mind as you complete the course:
- What safety systems exist?
- How do I identify, assess, and control workplace hazards?
- How are these safety systems put into practice in the workplace?
Assessment
The course is divided into training rooms. Each training room includes activities and finishes with a project that will be assessed by your teacher. Work through each training room carefully. This will help you complete all activites and the project. You must successfully complete each training room to receive credit for this course.
Your teacher will provide you with a detailed outline of how you will be assessed.
Training Rooms
Each training room has one or more guiding questions and is meant to focus on a group of related topics. Each training room finishes with a project.
Start each training room by skipping forward to the last page and reading through the instructions for the training room project. Then go back to the start of the training room and slowly work through the training room. When it is time to complete the project, remember to include any self- or peer assessments. Use Course Checklist to make sure you have completed all required assignments. To finish each training room, submit your completed project to your teacher for evaluation.
Training Room 1: Defining Workplace Safety Principles and Practices
Training Room 1 is all about workplace hazards: recognizing hazards and putting controls in place to minimize the risk. For Training Room 1 Project, you will create a presentation that showcases your knowledge of the safety controls for each of the five main workplace hazards.
Training Room 2: Workplace Safety in Action
Training Room 2 discusses five hazard topics:
- fire safety
- electrical safety
- ladder safety
- confined-spaces safety
- chemical safety
You can complete these five topics in any order. For Training Room 2 Project, you will create a Pocket Guide to Workplace Safety.
Toolkit
Many of the documents you will access, such as rubrics, examples, and checklists, are available in the Toolkit. Access the Toolkit any time you are looking for these kinds of documents.
Course Folder

You need to set up a course folder in which to save all of your work. You will also create a sub-folder in which to save your work for training room projects. Watch Creating a Folder on Your Desktop for help setting up your course folder.

Icons and Buttons
Throughout the course you will see icons. These are visual cues of what is expected of you. Review Icon Explanations to learn more about what each icon means.

You will also see Discuss buttons. Make sure you hover over these buttons to access activities you must complete.
When you hover over a Discuss button, you will see an activity you must complete.
