1. Unit B Intro
Unit B Introduction
In this unit you will focus on the nature of matter through an investigation of the properties and behaviour of gases. This unit builds on concepts of matter, energy, and chemical change discussed in Grade 9 Science and in Science 10.
You will also be using graphing, measuring, and algebraic techniques learned in previous math and science courses. This unit will prepare you for Unit D in this course and for your study of chemical equilibrium in Chemistry 30.
The major concepts developed in this unit include
- properties of gases and Boyle’s law
- Kelvin temperature, Charles’ law, and the combined gas law
- law of combining volumes and Avogadro’s theory
- molar volume and the ideal gas law
This module will explore how these relationships describe the behaviour of gases and how gases are used currently in various technologies.
This unit and module together will support this overarching question:
- How do we explain molecular behaviour using models of the gaseous state of matter?
The unit and module assessments are combined in this unit. To complete the unit assessment, you will write an explanation of how one or more of the gas laws is applied in the function and operation of a technology.
