The benefits of a child care provider making observations include the ability to
- plan activities that are appropriate for the children
- understand children, families, co-workers, and oneself better
- develop an understanding of child development
- improve communication with other child care providers, family members, and community agencies
- respond appropriately to individual children
Always remember to do the following:
- Observe and record activities and interests of each child.
- Be in position to see and be aware of the children around you.
- Observe and record without directing the activity or interest of the child.
Inferences and/or Interpretations
When making inferences and/or interpretations, remember to do the following:
- State your inference and/or interpretation using words such as “it seems that.”
- Base your inference and/or interpretation on multiple observations.
- Consider that cultural factors influence the way you see the world and interpret behaviour.
- Keep in mind the importance of watching what the child is doing and not what you think the child is doing.
