Session Summary

 

Review Session 3 to prepare for writing the quiz. As you review, note the sections that connect with the following points.

 

Observations

 

The benefits of a child care provider making observations include the ability to

• plan activities that are appropriate for the children

• understand children, families, co-workers, and oneself better

• develop an understanding of child development

• improve communication with other child care providers, family members, and community agencies

• respond appropriately to individual children

Always remember to do the following:

• Observe and record activities and interests of each child.
• Be in position to see and be aware of the children around you.
• Observe and record without directing the activity or interest of the child.

Inferences and/or Interpretations

 

When making inferences and/or interpretations, remember to do the following:

• State your inference and/or interpretation using words such as “it seems that.”
• Base your inference and/or interpretation on multiple observations.
• Consider that cultural factors influence the way you see the world and interpret behaviour.
• Keep in mind the importance of watching what the child is doing and not what you think the child is doing.
