Course Glossary

 

adult-directed activity: an activity led by an adult who tells the children what to do and sets time limits for the activity

 

They should be done infrequently and only when it is necessary to demonstrate a proper procedure.

 

affirmation: giving support or agreement

 

autonomy: personal independence; the ability to make and act on decisions

 

child-directed activity: an activity in which the child decides what to do and which materials to use, and how long she or he will be involved with the activity

 

closed-ended experience: an experience in which children are told what materials to use and how to use them

 

The end product is defined for the children.

 

doubt: feeling uncertain about something or someone; thinking that something is unlikely

 

guilt: feeling shame and regret as a result of knowing one has done wrong

 

initiative: ability to make and act on decisions without the advice or assistance of another person

 

open-ended experience: an experience that allows children to choose what materials they want to use from those available, how they want to use them, and whether or not there will be an end product

 

Open-ended experiences do not need to include the possibility for an end product.

 

play: a child-directed, intrinsically motivated activity, and the process by which young children develop and grow

 

The young child is usually actively exploring and pretending with materials.

 

self-esteem: pride in oneself; self-respect

 

shame: negative emotion that includes feelings of unworthiness, disgrace, embarrassment, and dishonour
