Course Glossary
Aboriginal: refers collectively to First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples
barrier: anything that prevents family members and child care providers from developing a positive relationship
circle time: a group activity where children sit in a circle to share their thoughts, experiences, and feelings
consensus: agreement among all or most of the members of a group
dialect: a variation of a language spoken among a particular group of people (for example, within a community or region, social class, profession, and so on)
family: used to refer to those people who are significant to the child in the child’s home life
Family members may include a mother, father, grandparent, step-parent, foster parent, aunt, uncle, sibling, or any other people who form a common household.
immigrant: a person from another country who has come to live in Canada
immigrate: to move to a new country for the purpose of living there
Indian: one of three groups of people recognized as Aboriginal (Indians, Inuit and Métis) in the Constitution Act, 1982
First Nation is term that came into common usage in the 1970s to replace the word Indian, which some people found offensive. The original use of the term Indian likely dates back to when Christopher Columbus tried to find a route to India and misnamed the Aboriginal people he met in North America.

For example, Azam and his family immigrated to Canada and settled in Peace River. Li and her family also immigrated to Peace River, but they lived in Toronto for a year when they first arrived in Canada.
interprovincial migration: moving to a province from another province or territory
migration: moving from one region or country to another
parent: principal caregiver
protocol: rules or expectations for appropriate behaviour
