1. Introduction

In this lesson you will be introduced to several drawing techniques.  If, however, you choose to study these on your own and submit alternative drawings into the dropboxes, that's an acceptable approach. The key concepts of the lessons include line, space, form, shape, value and (optional) colour. You will also demonstrate an understanding of perspective and composition. If you are working independantly, please demonstrate these concepts in your work.  If you are following the course, lets begin...

2. Assignment 1: Illuminated Names

This is an introduction assignment in several ways.  It will introduce you to the course in an easy way, designed to get your drawing ideas flowing, and get you thinking about who you are as a student and artist.  It will also introduce you to me, and give me a hint of what you're all about. To see samples of your first assignment, and instructions, follow

3. Watch and Learn: Shading

Please watch this short video for some basic tips on shading.  If you're already terrific at shading, take a peek anyway and get inspired!

4. Assignment 2: Intro to Pencil Technique

This slideshow will give you ideas, introduce techniques, and describes your next assignment on the last slide.

New Pencil Techniques

If you want to complete the assignment in your sketchbook, great!  If you want to print a template for this assignment, find it HERE

5. Assignment 3: Cartooning

1) If possible, attend Fred Curtolo's Cartooning lesson on campus or via Zoom. (This was on Sept 29)

2) If you are not able to attend - Please look at:

https://www.wikihow.com/Analyze-Political-Cartoons

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNkJNNuxsuQ

3) Create an Editorial Cartoon in your sketchbook, and submit it.  The topic can be anything - it doesn't have to be about politics, but it does have to convey your opinion about a topic. Sample topics:

The environment, politics, celebrities, a recent news story, current events, weather, sports, history, an event in your ELA Novel or Play, community events...

If you can double up by addressing an issue in your Social Studies or ELA, terrific!

The Cartoon Assignment Rubric is HERE

6. Watch and Learn: Perspective

Our next project is perspectoive drawing, and is a skill you will use forever in your Art. Watch and learn:

And if you really want to deep dive into perspective, here's a great website (optional):

7. Assignment 4: Perspective

Drawing in Perspective

Typically Art 10 students will demonstrate the ability to draw using 1 point perspective, Art 20s will be able to use 2 point, and Art 30s will use 3 point.  Submit whichever of those is a comfortable starting point for you.

Assignment

1) Review this handout: Perspective Packet.

2) Optional:  You may choose to print it, and do the worksheet style practice lessons in the package - they are not for marks but will help you a lot.

3) There are 3 youtube videos in this lesson - watch them.

4)  Look at samples of student work HERE.

5) Complete a polished drawing of either a city scape, or a detailed exterior of your dream home and submit.  If that's too easy, or if you have submitted one point perspective drawings in previous art classes, use 2 or 3 point perspective. Challenge yourself!

Art 30s with experience in this technique might even choose to complete a 4 or 5 point drawing- very tricky!

Use Pencil, Eraser, Ruler - adding colour or ink is not required, but is strongly encouraged.
