Module 7 - A Tropical Alberta
In This Module
Introduction to the Module you will investigate electromagnetic energy by completing the following lessons and activities.
Outline the contents of the module by lesson, any resources etc.
Lesson 1 –The Cambrian Explosion
Lesson 2 – A Billion Dollar Reef
Lesson 3 - Earthquakes
Lesson 4 - Raising the Rockies
There is also a unit quiz and unit exam that includes material from this module.
Big Picture
Big Picture
Can you imagine Alberta with a tropical climate and much of it's land mass under a sea ? Geological evidence indicates that at one time it was just as described. In this module we will be looking at the sudden propogation of life found in the geological record during the Cambrian period, investigate fossils of various types, learn about earthquakes and the movements of the Earth's crust that cause them.
Module 7 Inquiry
- What was the Cambrian explosion ?
- What are the different types of fossils ?
- What causes Earthquakes ?
- How do continents moved ?
Lesson 3.7.1
Lesson 1- The Cambrian Explosion
Get Focused
During the Cambrian era, an unprecedented biological event took place called the Cambrian explosion. In this lesson we will learn about the Cambrian explosion and try to explain what caused it.
Consider the following essential questions as you complete Lesson 1:
- When was the Cambrian era ?
- What was the Cambrian explosion ?
- How do scientists explain the sudden appearance of many types of animals during the Cambrian explosion

Reflect and Connect
There are different explanations for the Cambrian explosion that have been proposed. Research at least two different explanations and discuss which explanation seems the best to you and why. Post your answer to the discussion forum.
Module 7 : Lesson 1 Assignment.
Once you have completed all of the learning activities for this lesson, you can complete the online assignment.
Lesson Summary
In this lesson you learned about the sudden proliferation of life that occurred during the Cambrian era and some of the theories about what caused it.
Lesson 2 will look at factors contributing to petroleum creation.
Lesson 3.7.2
Lesson 2 - A Billion Dollar Reef
Get Focused
In this lesson we will learn about how the vast oil reserved found in Alberta is formed.
Consider the following essential questions as you complete Lesson 2:
- What are the conditions that contributed to the production of petroleum and natural gas reserves ?
- What are zoo plankton ?
- What is a petroleum trap ?
- What is seismic data

Once you have completed all of the learning activities for the lesson, you can complete the online assignment.
Lesson Summary
In this lesson you learned about how petroleum and natural gas reserves were formed in Alberta and how they are detected.
Lesson 3 you will learn about the causes, detection and measurement of earthquakes.
Lesson 3.7.3
Lesson 3 - Earthquakes
Get Focused
In this lesson we will learn about earthquakes. We will investigate the different types of waves connected with earthquakes, the cause and propagation of earthquakes and how to measure the destructiveness of earthquakes.
Consider the following essential questions as you complete Lesson 3 :
- What is a longitudinal wave ?
- What is a transverse wave ?
- What is a focal point ?
- What is the Richter scale

Once you have completed all of the learning activities for this lesson, you can complete the online assignment.
Lesson Summary
In this lesson you learned about the causes, propogation and impact of earthquakes. You also learned about instruments that can be used to measure earthquake activity.
Lesson 4 will discuss tectonic movement and mountain building.
Lesson 3.7.4
Lesson 4 - Raising the Rockies
Get Focused
In this lesson we will learn about plate tectonics and their affect on volcanic activity as well as other major events that have impacted Earth's history.
Consider the following essential questions as you complete Lesson 4 :

Module Summary and Assessment
Module Summary and Assessment
In this module we examined the various geological changes that have occurred to produce what we see today in Alberta. In particular we had a look at processes that have occurred that caused the creation
of the mineral wealth that is an important part of our economy.
Module Assessment
The assessment for this module includes the following.
In the next module you will learn about factors the affect climate.
