Module 10 - Changes in Populations
In This Module
The changes that occur in living systems, occur at an ecosystem, population and individual level. In this module we will investigate these different kinds of changes, how to describe them and how to predict them.
Module contents
Module 10__ Changing Populations
Lesson 1__ Primary and Secondary Succession
Lesson 2__ Populations
Lesson 3 __ Adaptations and Evolutionary Theory
Lesson 4 __Unit Review
Once you have completed these lessons you will complete the unit 4 quiz and will be able to complete the Unit 4 exam as well.
Big Picture
Big Picture
Changes occur in communities and populations in measurable and predictable ways. Scientists have observed patterns of change for habitats that have been newly created or disturbed, for populations in different environmental conditions and for individuals over periods of time. In this module we will investigate the nature and mechanisms of these changes.
Module 10 Inquiry
- What is succession ?
- How do we define populations ?
- How do we measure changes in populations ?
- What is an adaptation ?
- What is natural selection ?
- What is evolution ?
Lesson 4.10.1
Lesson 1- Primary and Secondary Succession
Get Focused
In this lesson we will investigate changes that occur in an ecological community. We will investigate the succession of steps that occur in an area that has a rock substrate as well as the succession of steps that occur in an are that has a previous soil substrate.
Consider the following essential questions as you complete Lesson 1:
- What is succession ?
- What are the differences between primary and secondary succession ?
- What are pioneer species ?
- What is a climax community

Reflect and Connect
After areas have been disturbed by mining and other industrial processes, companies are responsible to reclaim those areas. Which type of succession is this and how effective is the process ? Investigate and post your results on the discussion forum.
Module 10 : Lesson 1 Assignment.
Once you have completed the learning activities for this lesson, you can complete the online assignment.

Lesson Summary
In this lesson you learned about primary and secondary succession from the perspective of an ecological community.
Lesson 2 will look at changes from the perspective of populations.
Lesson 4.10.2
Lesson 2 - Populations
Get Focused
Populations can change in terms of their population numbers and demographic compositon. In this lesson we will investigate the mechanisms of population change and the methods and tools used to measure those changes.
Consider the following essential questions as you complete Lesson 2 :
- What is a population ?
- What is natality ?
- What is mortality ?
- What factors affect population growth and/or population decrease

Reflect and Connect
The human population of Earth has been increasing dramatically over the last century. Based on the current rate of population growth, when will the Earth achieve it's carrying capacity ? Investigate and report your findings to the discussion forum.
Module 10 : Lesson 2 Assignment.
Once you have completed all of the learning activities for this lesson, you can complete the online assignment.
Sci20 4.10.2 online assignment
Lesson Summary
In this lesson you learned about changes in populations including the factors that affect population change and thing that limit population increase.
Lesson 3 will investigate changes within individual which affect populations.
Lesson 4.10.3
Lesson 3 - Adaptations and Evolutions
Get Focused
Changes can also occur at the individual level which will eventually affect the composition of populations as well. In this lesson we will investigate the mechanisms of change within individuals that and the mechanism that can cause subsequent change to populations as well.
Consider the following essential questions as you complete Lesson 3 :
- What is variation ?
- What are causes of variation ?
- What is natural selection ?
- What changes have been observed in populations due to the action of natural selection

Micro evolution is almost universally accepted however much discussion still centers on macro-evolution. What is the difference between the two an why is there controversy about it ? Post your answer to the discussion forum.

Lesson 3- Unit 4 Review
Get Focused
This lesson is focused on reviewing the topics covered in this unit
Consider the following essential questions as you complete Lesson 3:
- Have you mastered the terms present in the module 7 and module 8 glossary ?
- Are there any topics you may want to hear explained again (See video area)
- Did I do well on the review assignment or do my results indicate a need to revisit some of the lessons ?

Module Summary and Assessment
Module Summary and Assessment
In this module you investigated changes in living systems from the community, population and individual perspective. You learned how communities change over time after being disturbed or from a bare rock substrate. You learned about the factors affecting the numbers a populations as well as the physical characteristics of individuals and the mechanism of natural selection which facilitates the various changes within a species.

Unit 4 Conclusion
In this unit you have investigated some of the different types of change that occur in living systems. We investigated the cycling of matter, succession, ecosystems and their components, changes in populations and the factors that cause them as well adaptations in individuals and populations. After completion of this unit you will be ready to complete the unit 4 quiz and exam as well as prepare for the final exam.
