Week 10 - Roles of Plants, Uses of Plants and Natural and Managed Resources

Lesson 2.1: The Role of Plants in the Environment

ACTIVITY A

Required Readings

Science in Action 7
pages 126 to 129
or

Science Focus 7
pages 132 to 133

Plants have several roles within the environment. Roles such as shelter and food provider are very important to the human population. One only has to look at third world countries to see the affects of plants on peoples way of life. Without plants numerous cycles in nature would never exist. The nitrogen and carbon cycles would not work without the input of plants. Major components, in the cycles, use plants as a stage in the change from one molecule to another.

Exercise 2.2

Lesson 2.2: We Use Plants in Many Ways

ACTIVITY A

Required Readings

Science in Action 7
pages 130 - 132
or

Science Focus 7
pages 132 to 137

Plants are involved in the Earth's ecosystem in a variety of ways. They manage and supply nutrients to nature's various cycles. The most direct example being the carbon/oxygen cycle. In this cycle the plants supply the carbon element through the production of carbon dioxide. Besides involvement in cycles, plants provide several useful products to human kind. One has only to sit down to a meal to see the great variety that plants bring to the table. In one meal a person could have a potato, lettuce, radishes and tomatoes. These choices would provide the fiber, protein and vitamins that we would need for a balanced meal. Also when we are sick numerous medications are derived from plants. For example Aspirin was originally obtained from the willow tree.
Exercise 2.2 - Growing Plants in Space
Role Play: International Space Station Activity

The role-play will involve the student becoming a plant biologist who is responsible for the growth and use of plants on the space station.

Job: Plant biologist

Problem: To supply the station with viable plants to use within the space station environment. The problem is very much like living on an island where you would be able to pick and choose plants that you would like.

Lesson 2.3: Natural and Managed Resources

ACTIVITY A

pages 133 to 137
or

pages 143 to 148

In Canada our resources are our greatest asset. We have a large number of unique animals and plants. Rare flora and fauna are protected within the Canadian park system. Also Canadians have a history of managing resources such as wheat and cattle. The Canadian prairies are the bread basket of the world. Also cattle from Canada are noted for their strong genetic characteristics.

Our forests are also a huge natural resource. We need to protect the forests as much as possible. During prime forest fire seasons, water bombers are on call 24 hours a day.

Recent forest fires in Alberta have burned large areas of woodlands. Some of the lumber from the forest fire areas can be harvested as only the branches and outer bark has been burned. Once these areas are harvested, tree planters are hired to replant these areas with seedlings to allow for more rapid grow back.

A FORESTRY VIDEO FIELD TRIP

For this activity you are going to watch 5 small movies from FEESA which show the process that trees take through the lumbering process.

Click on the links below to access each video from the Internet.
  • 41INTRO.(This is a strange one. You have to scroll to 1 minute and about 5 or 6 seconds to begin seeing it.)
  • 42TREEHA.MOV (Tree Harvesting)
  • 43SAWMIL.MOV (Sawmills)  (This is also a strange one. You have to scroll to 1 minute and about 50 to 60 seconds to begin seeing it.)
  • 44PULPMI.MOV (Pulpmills)  (This one will start about 4 seconds!)
