Should globalization shape identity?
The Social 10 course is centered around the main concept of Globalization. To begin this review, it is important to understand that individuals and groups of people express their identities in various ways. With today’s connected world people are exposed to other groups, cultures, ideas, belief systems and world views. Consequently, every individual must respond to the effects of globalization in a way that best defines his or her identity. Within this lesson students will…
- Explore ways in which individuals and collectives express identities (traditions, language, religion, spirituality, the arts, attire, relationship to land, ideological beliefs, role modeling)
- Acknowledge the importance of multiple perspectives in a variety of situations
- Identify the various ways that people in Canada express their identities
- Explore why people promote their culture and examine how globalization has shaped identities and cultures
- Analyze cultural communication in a globalized society.
Globalization has made an impact on different identities throughout the world and cultural groups are responding in one way or another to the pressures that they face. The focus of this issue is on the challenges that are associated with globalization and cultural identity.
Related Issue 2
Should people in Canada respond to the legacies of historical globalization?
Key Issues -
To what extent did early globalization affect peoples of the world?
How did the foundations and consequences of historical globalization affect people?
In what ways did imperialism benefit one people over another?
Under this issue, students investigated how new ideas and technological and social changes helped reshape European societies and economies and encouraged the new middle classes to expand their wealth by establishing global trade links.
Students explored, analyzed and evaluated various perspectives and points of view on how contemporary societies should respond to these legacies.
In conclusion, by contrasting the slave trade and child labour issues of the Industrial Revolution with today's slavery and child labour, this issue has compared the actions of early imperialists with contemporary globalizing forces to develop a better understanding of globalization's legacies. This enables students to assess the impacts of historical globalization on Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.

Related Issue 3
Does globalization contribute to sustainable prosperity for all people?
Key Issues
To what extent does the World Bank and IMF shape contemporary economic globalization?
To what extent does globalization contribute to sustainable prosperity for all people?
This unit focused on economic globalization and sustainable prosperity and is composed of outcomes that allow students to explore the impact of various events on economic globalization. Students reflected on how globalization shapes identity, the economy and environmental indicators. Students also examined how contemporary society responds to the legacies of historical globalization.
The objective is to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding that are necessary for students to think critically and respond appropriately to the issue of sustaining prosperity for all people. As as student, you should also start evaluating your own actions and consider to what extent you should embrace globalization.
