Welcome to the Endocrine System
This unit is all about the endocrine system, which is about hormones and their interactions with different cells in the human body. You'll learn about how they are regulated and what happens when they are not being regulated properly.
Follow the directions in each of the lessons in the table of contents. Do everything listed on each page as doing it all will help you learn the information well. If you do the minimum through these lessons you'll find much difficulty through this course.
Each lesson may have a video, a practice worksheet, a quiz, activity etc. and they are all there to help you understand the information better. If you see something highlighted in blue, it is a hyperlink for you to click. If you see something highlighted in green, it is also a link to click and it is an assignment/quiz which will be for marks.
Lesson 1 - Introduction to the Endocrine System
In this lesson you will learn about
1. a) Watch this video to get an overview of the endocrine system.
b) Watch this video to learn about feedback loops. This is a really important concept to understand, as you will need to describe the feedback loops for all the hormones in this system.
c) watch this video to learn about water regulation in the body.
2. Once you've watched the video answer the questions from this document. These questions will help make sure that you correctly understand the information from the lesson.
3. Read Chapter 13 pages 436-442 from the textbook for a deeper understanding of this material.
This PowerPoint outlines all the main points that you need to know from this lesson. You can use this PowerPoint as a review when you revisit this information at a later date.
Self Assessment Section. Have you come away from the lesson knowing all of the things that you need to know?
i) I can define these words and explain the function of the relevant hormones:
endocrine glands | hormones | endocrine system |
negative feedback mechanisms | antidiuretic hormone (ADH) | tropic hormones |
diabetes insipidus |
ii) I can explain the purpose of negative feedback in the body.
iii) I can explain the differences in time for the response of endocrine system versus the nervous system.
Lesson 2 - Growth Hormone and the Thyroid
In this lesson you will learn about
1. a) Watch this video to learn about human growth hormone and how it is regulated.
b) Watch this video to learn about the thyroid and parathyroid glands.
c) watch this video to learn about hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism.
2. Once you've watched the video answer the questions from this document. These questions will help make sure that you correctly understand the information from the lesson.
3. Read Chapter 13 pages 444-450 from the textbook for a deeper understanding of this material.
This PowerPoint outlines all the main points that you need to know from this lesson. You can use this PowerPoint as a review when you revisit this information at a later date.
Self Assessment Section. Have you come away from the lesson knowing all of the things that you need to know?
i) I can define these words, and describe the functions of the hormones in this list.:
pituitary gland | anterior pituitary | posterior pituitary |
human growth hormone (hGH) | thyroid gland | thyroxine (T4) |
hypothyroidism | hyperthyroidism | thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) |
goitre | calcitonin | parathyroid gland |
parathyroid hormone | gigantism | cretinism |
Grave's disease |
ii) I can say which hormones come from the posterior pituitary, and which come from the anterior pituitary.
iii) I can explain the negative feedback mechanisms for thyroxine, calcitonin, and parathyroid hormone.
Lesson 3 - Adrenal Gland
In this lesson you will learn about
1. Watch this video to learn about the adrenal gland, and it's response to short term and long term stress.
2. Once you've watched the video answer the questions from this document. These questions will help make sure that you correctly understand the information from the lesson.
3. Read Chapter 13 pages 451-455 from the textbook for a deeper understanding of this material.
This PowerPoint outlines all the main points that you need to know from this lesson. You can use this PowerPoint as a review when you revisit this information at a later date.
Self Assessment Section. Have you come away from the lesson knowing all of the things that you need to know?
i) I can define these words, and describe the functions of the hormones in this list.:
epinephrine and norepinephrine | adrenal gland | adrenal medulla |
adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) | aldosterone | adrenal cortex |
cortisol |
ii) I can describe the short term stress response in terms of hormonal regulation and physiological effects (the effects that the hormones have on the body)
iii) I can describe the long term stress response in terms of hormonal regulation and physiological effects (the effects that the hormones have on the body)
Lesson 4 - Pancreas and Gonads
In this lesson you will learn about
1. a) Watch this video to learn about the pancreas, and the hormones that it secretes.
b) Watch this video to learn in more detail about the feedback loops for both insulin and glucagon.
2. Once you've watched the video answer the questions from this document. These questions will help make sure that you correctly understand the information from the lesson.
3. Read Chapter 13 pages 456-462 from the textbook for a deeper understanding of this material.
4. Complete the blood glucose and diabetes assignment.
6. Finally, now that you're ready and have finished reviewing and studying write the endocrine system quiz
This PowerPoint outlines all the main points that you need to know from this lesson. You can use this PowerPoint as a review when you revisit this information at a later date.
Self Assessment Section. Have you come away from the lesson knowing all of the things that you need to know?
i) I can define these words, and describe the functions of the hormones in this list.:
pancreas | beta cells | alpha cells |
islets of Langerhans | insulin | glucagon |
hyperglycemia | type 1 diabetes | type 2 diabetes |
ii) I can explain the causes of type 1 and type 2 diabetes and the appropriate treatments and lifestyles for the people with diabetes.
Review - Endocrine System
Now that you have finished the learning for the endocrine system, here are some resources to help you study for the endocrine quiz, the unit A test, and for the diploma exam.
1. Here are some detailed endocrine system review notes.
2. Go through the questions on this worksheet. These are review questions from the whole Unit. Check your answers here.
3. Here are some diploma questions for you to practice with from the entire unit, and you can check your answers here.
5. Here is the main point concept guide for the endocrine system. You will want to be able to explain each of the structures/functions etc. of each of the points listed on this sheet in detail without looking at your notes. If you can do that then you are in good shape.
Once all that is done, arrange a time with your teacher to write the unit A exam. Then, you are now through the endocrine system, and able to begin unit B which is all about the reproductive system.
