Welcome to Cell Division
This unit is all about the cell division. You will learn about mitosis, which is the process of division for somatic cells (body cells), and about meiosis, which is the process of division for gamete cells (sex cells - egg and sperm). You will then learn about what happens when cellular division goes wrong. Finally, you'll learn about various other life cycles apart from humans.
Follow the directions in each of the lessons in the table of contents. Do everything listed on each page as doing it all will help you learn the information well. If you do the minimum through these lessons you'll find much difficulty through this course.
Each lesson may have a video, a practice worksheet, a quiz, activity etc. and they are all there to help you understand the information better. If you see something highlighted in blue, it is a hyperlink for you to click. If you see something highlighted in green, it is also a link to click and it is an assignment/quiz which will be for marks.
Lesson 1 - Cell Cycle and Mitosis
In this lesson you will learn about
1. a) Watch this video to learn about the cell cycle and mitosis.
b) Here is a second (shorter video) all about mitosis.
2. Once you've watched the video answer the questions from this document. These questions will help make sure that you correctly understand the information from the lesson.
3. Read Chapter 16 pages 550-551from the textbook for a deeper understanding of this material.
4. Complete the cell division gizmo assignment.
This PowerPoint outlines all the main points that you need to know from this lesson. You can use this PowerPoint as a review when you revisit this information at a later date.
Lesson 2 - Meiosis
In this lesson you will learn about
1. Watch this video to learn about meiosis, which is the division of sex cells (gametes).
2. Watch this video to learn about the difference between chromosomes and chromatids, which will be very important for this whole unit, and essential to understanding the difference between mitosis and meiosis.
3. Once you've watched the video answer the questions from this document. These questions will help make sure that you correctly understand the information from the lesson.
4. Read Chapter 16 pages 563-572 from the textbook for a deeper understanding of this material.
5. There are three assignments to do after this lesson.
a) Complete the meiosis stop motion animation assignment. This one will ensure that you know all of the steps that take place in the process of meiosis.
b) Complete the meiosis gizmo assignment.
c) Complete the lesson 1-2 quiz, then, you're ready to move on to lesson 3.
This PowerPoint outlines all the main points that you need to know from this lesson. You can use this PowerPoint as a review when you revisit this information at a later date.
Lesson 3 - Karyotyping and Nondisjunction
In this lesson you will learn about
1. a) Watch this video to learn about nondisjunction.
b) watch this video to learn about karyotyping.
2. Once you've watched the video answer the questions from this document. These questions will help make sure that you correctly understand the information from the lesson.
3. Read this to learn about different types of disorders associated with different chromosome numbers.
3. Read Chapter 16 pages 553-567 from the textbook for a deeper understanding of this material.
4. Complete the human karyotyping gizmo assignment.
This PowerPoint outlines all the main points that you need to know from this lesson. You can use this PowerPoint as a review when you revisit this information at a later date.
Lesson 4 - Reproductive Strategies
In this lesson you will learn about
1. Watch this video to learn about reproductive strategies for non-human organisms.
2. Read Chapter 16 pages 573-580 from the textbook for a deeper understanding of this material.
3. Complete this activity that is all about different life cycles of other organisms. The diploma will have a question similar that these about some organism that you have never heard of before.
4. Complete the chromosome and chromatid number quiz
This PowerPoint outlines all the main points that you need to know from this lesson. You can use this PowerPoint as a review when you revisit this information at a later date.
Review - Cell Division
You have finished learning all about the cell cycle. Here are the review materials for the unit to help you study for the unit test and for the diploma exam.
1. Here is a notes package covering cell division
2. Here are some diploma questions to go through
b) Here are the answers
3. Here is the main concept study guide. You should be able to look at each thing on this sheet and be able to explain in detail the structures/processes/functions without referring to your notes. If you can do that you will be in really good shape.
3. Complete the Cell cycle quiz.
Now that you've completed all of the learning and tasks for the cell cycle part of this unit, continue on to the genetics section and learn about how traits are passed along through generations.
