Welcome to Genetics
This unit is all about the genetics and how genes pass to offspring. There are various methods of inheritance, such as dominance, and incomplete dominance. You'll learn about where genes are located on chromosome, and how to trace genes through generations.
Follow the directions in each of the lessons in the table of contents. Do everything listed on each page as doing it all will help you learn the information well. If you do the minimum through these lessons you'll find much difficulty through this course.
Each lesson may have a video, a practice worksheet, a quiz, activity etc. and they are all there to help you understand the information better. If you see something highlighted in blue, it is a hyperlink for you to click. If you see something highlighted in green, it is also a link to click and it is an assignment/quiz which will be for marks.
Lesson 1 - Autosomal Recessive Inheritance
In this lesson you will learn about
1. Watch this video to learn about monohybrids and the punnet square.
b) Watch this video to learn about alleles, genotypes, and phenotypes.
2. Once you've watched the video answer the questions from this document. These questions will help make sure that you correctly understand the information from the lesson. You can do your work on a separate sheet of paper for more space.
3. Read Chapter 17 pages 586-587 from the textbook for a deeper understanding of this material.
4. Complete the mouse genetics (one trait) gizmo.
This PowerPoint outlines all the main points that you need to know from this lesson. You can use this PowerPoint as a review when you revisit this information at a later date.
Lesson 2 - Monohybrids & Dominance
In this lesson you will learn about
1. a) Watch this video to learn about Mendelian genetics.
b) Watch this video to learn about different kinds of inheritance, such as incomplete dominance and codominance.
2. Once you've watched the video answer the questions from this document. These questions will help make sure that you correctly understand the information from the lesson. Do your work on a separate piece of paper for more space.
3. Go through this activity. This activity will help make sure that you understand the information so far from this lesson.
4. Read Chapter 17 pages 588-591 from the textbook for a deeper understanding of this material.
5. There are two assignments to complete for this lesson.
a) complete the monohybrid cross probability assignment
b) complete the chicken genetics gizmo assignment.
This PowerPoint outlines all the main points that you need to know from this lesson. You can use this PowerPoint as a review when you revisit this information at a later date.
Lesson 3 - Dihybrids
In this lesson you will learn about
1. Watch this video to learn about crossing organisms for two traits instead of just one.
2. Once you've watched the video answer the questions from this document. These questions will help make sure that you correctly understand the information from the lesson. Do your work on a separate piece of paper if you need more room for these questions.
3. Read Chapter 17 pages 591-598 from the textbook for a deeper understanding of this material.
4. a) Complete these practice questions on dihybrid crosses.
b) when finished answering the practice questions, check your answers here.
5. Complete the assignment mouse genetics (two traits) gizmo assignment.
6. You have now finished learning the information from the first three lessons in this unit. It is now time to write the lesson 1-3 quiz.
This PowerPoint outlines all the main points that you need to know from this lesson. You can use this PowerPoint as a review when you revisit this information at a later date.
Lesson 4 - Lethal Alleles and Epistasis
In this lesson you will learn about
1. Watch this video to learn about lethal alleles.
b) Watch this video to learn about polygenic inheritance and epistasis.
2. a) Complete the practice questions about dihybrid crosses and epistasis
b) check your answers here
This PowerPoint outlines all the main points that you need to know from this lesson. You can use this PowerPoint as a review when you revisit this information at a later date.
Lesson 5 - Gene Mapping
In this lesson you will learn about
1. a) Watch this video to learn about mapping where genes are on a chromosome. This is a longer video to get you more acquainted with this topic.
b) This next video is of the same material, but is shorter and can be used well as a review.
2. Once you've watched the video answer the questions from this document. These questions will help make sure that you correctly understand the information from the lesson.
3. Read Chapter 17 pages 599-601 from the textbook for a deeper understanding of this material.
4. Complete the chromosome mapping assignment.
This PowerPoint outlines all the main points that you need to know from this lesson. You can use this PowerPoint as a review when you revisit this information at a later date.
Lesson 6 - Sex Linked Inheritance
In this lesson you will learn about
1. Watch this video you will learn about traits that are sex-linked, which means that they are on the sex chromosomes.
b) Watch this video to learn about how sex-linked genes were discovered with fruit flies.
3. Read Chapter 17 pages 601-604 from the textbook for a deeper understanding of this material AND complete the practice problems at the bottom of page 603
This PowerPoint outlines all the main points that you need to know from this lesson. You can use this PowerPoint as a review when you revisit this information at a later date.
Lesson 7 - Autosomal Pedigrees
In this lesson you will learn about
1. Watch this video to learn about pedigrees, which are used for tracking traits through generations of people. Don't worry too much about the X-linked pedigrees and traits as this will the focus of the next lesson.
2. Once you've watched the video answer the questions from this document. These questions will help make sure that you correctly understand the information from the lesson. This has questions from the next lesson as well. You will be able to answer the questions that are not sex chromosomes (sex-linked genes). After the next lesson you will do the rest of the questions.
3. Read Chapter 17 pages 610-613 from the textbook for a deeper understanding of this material.
4. Complete the pedigrees assignment
This PowerPoint outlines all the main points that you need to know from this lesson. You can use this PowerPoint as a review when you revisit this information at a later date.
Lesson 8 - Sex-linked Pedigrees
In this lesson you will learn about
1. a) Watch this video as a pedigree review.
b) Watch this video do go through a pedigree example using an X-linked trait.
2. Once you've watched the video answer the questions from this document. These questions will help make sure that you correctly understand the information from the lesson. You'll have started these questions from the previous lesson, but were unable to do the sex-linked questions. You should now be able to do the rest of the questions on this document.
3. Read Chapter 17 pages 613-617 from the textbook for a deeper understanding of this material.
4. Complete the lesson 5-8 quiz. Then you've completed all of the lessons for the genetics section of this unit.

Review - Genetics
Now that you have finished all of the learning for the genetics part of this unit, here is some review material to get you prepared for the genetics quiz, the unit test, and for the diploma exam.
1. Here is a notes package for the genetics part of this unit. The second half of this package is the DNA notes, which is the next section that you will learn about, so don't worry about going over those notes at this time. You'll want to go up until page 54.
2. Here is the genetics main concept study guide. you should be able to look at any point on this sheet and be able to explain the structure/function etc. in detail without looking at your notes. It is good news if you can do that, and then you are ready for the genetics quiz.
3. Next, review all of the information from the genetics lessons and complete the genetics quiz. Then, move on to learn about DNA.
