Welcome to DNA

This unit is all about DNA. You'll learn what DNA is made of. You will learn the processes of DNA replication, which is creating more strands of DNA preparing for cellular division, as well as transcription, and translation, show how DNA is used as information to create proteins.

Follow the directions in each of the lessons in the table of contents. Do everything listed on each page as doing it all will help you learn the information well. If you do the minimum through these lessons you'll find much difficulty through this course.

Each lesson may have a video, a practice worksheet, a quiz, activity etc. and they are all there to help you understand the information better. If you see something highlighted in blue, it is a hyperlink for you to click. If you see something highlighted in green, it is also a link to click and it is an assignment/quiz which will be for marks.

Lesson 1 - Introduction and Replication

In this lesson you will learn about

1. Watch this video for a tour around the cell and to learn about DNA. This is an interactive video, which means you can click and drag around on the screen and look around.

b) Watch this video for an introduction to DNA and to learn some of the history of discovering it.

c) Watch this video to learn about DNA replication.

2. Once you've watched the video answer the questions from this document. These questions will help make sure that you correctly understand the information from the lesson.

3. Read Chapter 18 pages 624-635 from the textbook for a deeper understanding of this material.

4. Complete the building DNA gizmo assignment.

This PowerPoint outlines all the main points that you need to know from this lesson. You can use this PowerPoint as a review when you revisit this information at a later date.

Lesson 2 - Transcription

In this lesson you will learn about

1. Watch these video to learn about transcription, which is the process of converting DNA into RNA. The first video is an interactive video, which means you can click and drag around on the screen and look around.

2. Once you've watched the video answer the questions from this document. These questions will help make sure that you correctly understand the information from the lesson. There are questions on this document from the next lesson. You'll be completing the rest of the questions after the next lesson.

3. Read Chapter 18 pages 636-638 from the textbook for a deeper understanding of this material.

4. Complete the RNA and Protein Synthesis Gizmo

This PowerPoint outlines all the main points that you need to know from this lesson. You can use this PowerPoint as a review when you revisit this information at a later date.

Lesson 3 - Translation

In this lesson you will learn about

1. Watch these videos to learn about translation, which is using the piece or RNA created by transcription, and turning it into a protein. The first video is an interactive video, which means you can click and drag around on the screen and look around.

2. Once you've watched the video answer the questions from this document. These questions will help make sure that you correctly understand the information from the lesson. Complete the rest of the questions from this workbook document that you were not able to from the previous lesson.

3. Read Chapter 18 pages 638-642 from the textbook for a deeper understanding of this material.

4. Complete the build a snork worksheet for practice doing translation.

5. Complete the protein synthesis STEM case gizmo.

This PowerPoint outlines all the main points that you need to know from this lesson. You can use this PowerPoint as a review when you revisit this information at a later date.

Lesson 4 - Mutations in DNA

In this lesson you will learn about

1. Watch this video to learn about mutations in a DNA sequence, and what the effect of this will be on the created protein.

b) Watch this video. It is a really clever video to explain using words (from Harry Potter) to show what the effect of these mutations is.

2. Once you've watched the video answer the questions from this document. These questions will help make sure that you correctly understand the information from the lesson.

3. Read Chapter 18 pages 643-647 from the textbook for a deeper understanding of this material.

4. Do this mutations practice worksheet to get comfortable manipulating a strand of DNA and identifying the kind of mutation.

5. Complete the mutations assignment

This PowerPoint outlines all the main points that you need to know from this lesson. You can use this PowerPoint as a review when you revisit this information at a later date.

Lesson 5 - Biotechnology

In this lesson you will learn about

1. a) Watch this video to learn about biotechnologies. You will learn about how a specific gene is taken out of a larger piece of DNA.

b). Watch this video to learn about a few transgenic organisms that have been created. This means that they have genes from organisms from different species.

c) Watch this video to learn about bioethics.

2. Once you've watched the video answer the questions from this document. These questions will help make sure that you correctly understand the information from the lesson.

3. Read Chapter 18 pages 647-661 from the textbook for a deeper understanding of this material.

4. Complete the Genetic Engineering Gizmo Assignment.

5. Now that you have finished all the lessons for the DNA section, complete the DNA quiz. Then, move on to this unit review. Contact your teacher to arrange a time for you to write the unit C test.

This PowerPoint outlines all the main points that you need to know from this lesson. You can use this PowerPoint as a review when you revisit this information at a later date.

Review - DNA

Congratulations, you have finished learning everything that you need to know for unit C. Now, you'll want to review everything to prepare for the unit test. There will be some things posted on this page as review for the DNA section of this unit. Make sure to go back to the review sections of the cell cycle and the genetics section of this unit to help you prepare for the unit test.

1. Here is a notes package

2. Here is the main concept study guide. You should be able to explain each point on here in detail (knowing structure/function etc.) without looking at your notes.

3. Finally, now that you've finished studying, complete the DNA quiz. Then, contact your teacher to plan a time for you to write the unit C test

You can now move onto the final unit of this course (yay!), in which you will learn about how populations change in the wild, and how to see how populations change over time.
