Welcome to Populations and Communities

This unit is all about how population sizes is nature find equilibrium, and what things occur to disrupt this equilibrium. You will also learn how to analyze populations.

Follow the directions in each of the lessons in the table of contents. Do everything listed on each page as doing it all will help you learn the information well. If you do the minimum through these lessons you'll find much difficulty through this course.

Each lesson may have a video, a practice worksheet, a quiz, activity etc. and they are all there to help you understand the information better. If you see something highlighted in blue, it is a hyperlink for you to click. If you see something highlighted in green, it is also a link to click and it is an assignment/quiz which will be for marks.

Lesson 1 - Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium

In this lesson you will learn about

1. a) Watch this video to learn about Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium.

b) Watch this video to go through a few sample Hardy-Weinberg problems.

2. Once you've watched the video answer the questions from this document. These questions will help make sure that you correctly understand the information from the lesson.

3. Read Chapter 19 pages 678-688 from the textbook for a deeper understanding of this material.

This PowerPoint outlines all the main points that you need to know from this lesson. You can use this PowerPoint as a review when you revisit this information at a later date.

4. Once you click on the assignment, read all of the instructions first. Complete the Hardy-Weinberg Gizmo assignment.

5. Complete the Hardy-Weinberg Questions assignment

Lesson 2 - Causes of Gene Pool Change

In this lesson you will learn about

1. a) Watch this video to learn about genetic drift.

b) Watch this video to learn about gene flow.

Review - Populations and Communities

You've now finished learning through the final unit of this course. There are only a couple of other matters to attend to before you're completely finished. On this page there will be some review information to help you prepare for the populations quiz, the unit D test, and the diploma exam.

1. Here is a notes package with information covering what you learned about this unit.

2. Here is the main concept study guide. With this document you should be able to look at any of the points here and explain in detail the structure/function etc. without looking at your notes. That will show you that you understand this information and are ready to proceed.

3. Write the final quiz of this course, the populations quiz. Once done, contact your teacher to plan a time for you to write the unit D test

Hoorah, you're in the homestretch. All that is left in this course is to study, study, study! make sure to contact your teacher if there are any questions or concerns in order to get them straightened out right away.
