1. Introduction

Units One and Two Review

The Big Question in Social Studies 30-2

"To what extent should we embrace an ideology?"

_________

Issue Question:

Should ideology be the foundation of identity?

Duration: 2 blocks (80 mins each + homework)

Your journey in this course began with exploring the connection between ideology and identity.  It also required you to learn about the factors that might influence our individual and collective beliefs and values, such as our physical environment or our cultural backgrounds, which in turn shape our experiences and our attitudes.

Equally important, you examined the foundations and characteristics of ideologies.  Hopefully at this point in the course you know that ideologies fall on a spectrum between those that value collectivism (the zoo) and those that value individualism (the jungle).

Finally, you have become familiar with the themes of ideologies.  These include: nation, class, religion and the environment.

Please move on to the Units One and Two Review Assignment and show me what you have learned so far in the course.

3. Lesson

The information in this lesson is super important!! You should probably review and read this. Also, write it down somewhere. Feel free to ask questions as you work through the lesson and write your first Assignment Type III.

In Social Studies 30-2 the Written Response Part A of your diploma is comprised of three separate writing assignments.  This lesson will teach the "how to's" of completing assignment type III.  In assignment type III you will demonstrate your ability to process information, of analysis, evaluating and synthesizing information as well as your ability to apply your knowledge and understanding of social studies.

Read and review the template for writing a written response type III.  I would also encourage you to use this template when completing the assignment for this lesson.

Review the rubric for writing a written response type III.  This will help you understand what you need to include in your response.  It is very important to note that there are TWO PARTS to the assignment.  Part One requires to explore the issue and analyze the various points of view and Part Two requires to you take and defend your own position on the issue.

Reminder: Establish a Position

Your position MUST be CLEAR.  That does not mean that you have to argue completely for or against the perspectives presented in the source, but you do have to say how much you think it should be embraced.  No matter what position you take, you must support it in the body of your essay.  Possible answers might include qualifiers such as

  • "...to the full extent"
  • "...to a great extent"
  • "... to a certain extent"
  • "... to the extent that..."
  • "... to no extent..."

4. Conclusion

You have now completed the first three units of study and are ready to write the unit 2 final.  It consists of 25 multiple choice questions.

I would recommend you download the multiple choice tips handout and review it before you attempt this test.
