Key Issues
What are some legacies of historical globalization?
How has cultural contact affected people?
How are the legacies of historical globalization continuing to affect people?
In this lesson students will have the opportunity to explore cultural contact between Europeans and Indigenous peoples around the world (including Canada). Due to the exchange of items such as foods, clothing, technologies and tools, cultural contact impacted all of the peoples involved and the results can still be seen today. Throughout this lesson it is important to consider what role cultural contact played in the beginnings of the process known as globalization.

CHAPTER READING:
Read Chapter Six pages 137-157 and answer the following questions. When completed, check your answers against those provided within the 'self check' link, below:
1. Define the following terms:

b. Legacy
2. Define the term, ethnocentrism. What role has ethnocentrism played in Canadian history? (research and discuss two
different examples)
3. Watch the following four minute video, Colonialism: Sins of Europe in the Scramble for Africa and answer the following questions.
a. Describe colonialism and the Scramble for Africa?
b. What was the European role in the Scramble for Africa?
c.
Explain the long term effects of colonialism (ie: Scramble for Africa)?
4. To answer the next two questions watch the following video, then compare the following three maps of Africa (click on the little map to view all three maps within this link) and answer these questions:
What is the main difference between the first two maps?
How did the Scramble for Africa of the 1800's and 1900's
affect the current borders of Africa?
5. Explain the origin and impact of de-population on Africa and describe how the indenture system has had a similar impact on India.
6. What is de-industrialization and how did the British
government contribute to this in India? What was its impact?
7. Click on the Canadian Friends of Burma link, then click on the Issues link in the left tool bar. Identify and describe three human rights issues occurring in Burma today. Are Canadians able to take any type of action against these matters?

1. Research and compile images and informative captions that are concise but address the questions listed below (as presented in the text).
In other words, use the following FOUR questions as a guide to summarize the main points presented in Chapter 6.
Present your findings in a power point presentation.
(Note: these questions are sub-headings within Chapter 6, so use this chapter as a resource)
- What are some legacies of historical globalization?
- In general, how has cultural contact affected indigenous peoples?
- How has the exchange of goods and technologies affected people?
- How are the legacies of historical globalization continuing to affect people today?

2. Research the legacies of colonial rule on ONE African country in the 19th Century (refer to map - Colonial Africa). Consider the people, their government, the country's resources and how those resources might have served the people differently had they not been governed by colonial rule. Present your findings and predictions in the form of a power point presentation that includes images and informative captions. Your captions should be concise (2 to 4 sentences), but must address the following topics:
- People
- Colonial government
- Country's resources being harvested for colonial power
- Value of resources to the African country
- Predictions and impact of Colonial government on African country
- Use the following Rubric to guide you through your presentation.
