Intro - Globalization and Identity
Key Issue - To what extent does globalization shape one’s identity?
Welcome to Grade 10-1 Social Studies!
It is a pleasure to be teaching you and I look forward to getting to know you better as the year progresses.
This course is centered around the main concept of Globalization. To begin this study, it is important to understand that individuals and groups of people express their identities in various ways. With today’s connected world people are exposed to other groups, cultures, ideas, belief systems and world views. Consequently, every individual must respond to the effects of globalization in a way that best defines his or her identity. Within this lesson students will…
- Explore ways in which individuals and collectives express identities (traditions, language, religion, spirituality, the arts, attire, relationship to land, ideological beliefs, role modeling)
- Acknowledge the importance of multiple perspectives in a variety of situations
- Identify the various ways that people in Canada express their identities
- Explore why people promote their culture and examine how globalization has shaped identities and cultures
- Analyze cultural communication in a globalized society.
Lesson
1. Identify 5 factors that help define who you are. Then explain how these factors work to mold the person that you are.
2. Explain how collective cultural groups within Canada (such as Francophones) affirm their identity in an environment
where they are a minority.
3. What is a ‘collective identity’? List 5 collectives that you belong to (ex: classroom). Complete the following table. Then summarize what you the table suggests about yourself.
Collective | Purpose | Tradition |
My Classroom | To learn together | Take attendance at the beginning of class |
4. Explain how your identity may be connected to that of a Coltan miner in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Is this a positive or negative connection, or both? Explain using details from the text and tutorial discussions.
5. We will
be spending significant time looking at the impact of globalization on the aboriginal cultures of Canada. What does “aboriginal” mean, and how does it relate to the terms indigenous, native, and First Nations? (hint, one of these terms is not
on page 12).
6. To familiarize yourself with the challenges faced by the Lubicon Cree, refer to the section on the Lubicon Cree (page 32-33) and watch the following video: (no question to answer here)

Create a collage of words and images and/or quotations that help to express the various aspects of your personality. Things to include in your collage – traditions, languages, arts, spiritual or religious aspects, political beliefs, economic philosophy, origin of birth, how you like to dress, interests, etc. To accompany your display, develop a well written paragraph that details and explains your collage and addresses the following question: To what extend does globalization affect or influence my identity?
2. Write an ‘I am’ poem or rap that stresses three or four influential features in your life. Present your poem/rap creatively alongside pictures/graphics. Things that you MUST include in your poem/rap – family or ethnic traditions, languages, arts, spiritual or religious aspects, political beliefs, origin of birth, how you like to dress, interests, etc. To accompany your display, develop a well written paragraph in response to the following question: To what extent does globalization affect my identity?
3. Refer to the section on the Lubicon Cree (page 32-33) and Lubicon Land. Create a visual timeline showing the events that have affected the identity of the Lubicon Cree. For each event, write a phrase or sentence that identifies the connection to the Lubicon Cree. Finally, in a few paragraphs, discuss whether the effects on the Lubicon Cree have been positive, negative or both. Be sure to justify your response. Compile your project in an elaborate Word document or power point presentation.
