Intro - Historical Globalization in Canada

Key Issues
How did historical globalization affect Canada?
What are some legacies of historical globalization in Canada and how do some continue to affect Canada?

In this lesson students will continue to explore cultural contact between European and Indigenous peoples within Canada by exploring the interactions between First Peoples with European explorers and fur traders. Students will also have a brief opportunity to assess current impacts of globalization on Canada's First Nations peoples.

Read Chapter Seven ( pages 161-183), watch the following tutorial on Legacies of Historical Globalization in Canada and answer the following questions. When completed, check your answers against those provided within the 'self check' link, below.

Conclusion

Students have explored historical globalization in Canada by examining the fur trade, European immigration, assimilation, the Indian Act, residential schools, treaties and land claims issues to name a few. Students will analyze how people responded to historical globalization by examining the situation of Rwanda, Apartheid, Japanese Internment, the Indian Act and consider their role in the current set of circumstances.
