Intro - Identity, Language and Culture
Key Issues -
How do people affirm and promote their culture and their language in a globalizing world?|
How do governments and international organizations affirm and promote languages and cultures in a globalizing world?
To what extent can people respond to globalizing forces that affect identity?
Globalization has made an impact on different identities throughout the world and cultural groups are responding in one way or another to the pressures that they face. This lesson will focus on the challenges that are associated with globalization and cultural identity.
Lesson
CHAPTER READING:
Read Chapter 4 (pages 89-102), and answer the following questions.
When completed, check your answers against those provided within the 'self check' link, below.
1. In your opinion, what are the three most important aspects of an individual's identity. Explain why and support your answer.
2. Refer to the cartoon on page 92, and explain the cartoonist's message.
3. Provide an example of cultural revitalization. Then discuss whether you think cultural revitalization is beneficial and be sure to explain why or why not.
4. a) What is your opinion of the CRTC? Justify your answer with evidence.
b) How would someone who opposes your viewpoint justify their position?
5. Throughout its history as a country, Canadians have experienced challenges with language and culture protection. What two federal Acts helped protect language and culture in Canada?
6. Identify and provide an example of Intangible Heritage.
7 a). List strategies that Canada has taken to promote and preserve its characteristics as a bilingual country.
b). Think about various perspectives such as First Nations, Quebecois, Franco-Albertans, Anglophones in Quebec and unofficial minorities. How might each of them respond to the various efforts to promote Canada's bilingual nature? Provide examples to establish your answer.
8. Refer to pages 14-15 of your textbook to determine if all the key questions have been addressed. If not, review all the chapters to ensure you understand how to answer each of those questions. (no answer required)
