Description

1. Introduction

Writing Assignment Type I

Big Idea: To what extent should we embrace an ideology?

Key issue: In Social Studies 30-2 You will be required to write 3 types of assignments on your diploma.  They include:

  • Type I: Sort, predict and place value
  • Type II: Interpret sources and defend a position on an issue
  • Type III: Analyze various points of view on an issue and defend your own position

Duration: 2 blocks (80 mins each + homework)

A major component of your diploma mark will be your ability to complete three types of written assignments.  This lesson is designed to teach you a formula for completing writing assignment type I.  You will be required to use the knowledge you learned in units 1-3 to successfully complete it.

Specifically, In Units 1 and 2 you learned about the economic system of classical liberalism.  Then at the beginning of unit 3 you learned about the problems with the system of classical liberalism and why individuals like Karl Marx rejected that philosophy.  In this lesson you will apply that knowledge while you learn about writing assignment type #1.

2. Lesson

The information in this lesson is super important!  You should probably review and read this. Also, write it down somewhere. Feel free to ask questions as you work through this assignment and write your first Assignment Type I.

Writing Assignments Type #1  Are Fact Questions

This question will test your knowledge of specific concepts within all four related issues from the program of studies.

Sort, Knowledge and Attach Value

Suggestions for Succes

  • You will be given a visual prompt of either a: jigsaw or crossword puzzle, blocks, webs, etc
  • The material given will ask you to sort out what is the correct material and incorrect material
  • I recommend using a T- Chart to sort and separate the information.  If there is information that you do not recognize, put it to the side.  When you are done sorting the information you know, go back and see if the missing information makes more sense to you.  If not, do not use it in your response
  • Here is an example to get you started:

Characteristics of a Free Market Economy

Characteristics of a Planned Economy

路      Supply and demand

路      ?

路      ?

路      Government planning

路      ?

路      ?

  • You will be expected to write about what you know and PLEASE ignore what you do not know; if you cannot recognize the meaning of the prompts, you are better off using your own knowledge and not using the prompts at all
  • You may write about one characteristic or a selection of a few characteristics.  You may also explain why the incorrect concepts are wrong, so you can demonstrate your understanding by writing off the wrong information.  May recommendation would be to discuss two or three of the terms that apply.
  • When explaining why the terms are important to the concept be sure to use specific examples and case studies to support your response.  For example- when asked what the important characteristics of a market economy are in Canada you may want to give examples of how competition provides consumers with the greatest quality products for the lowest price.

  • What is the purpose of this assignment anyway?  When you are asked to explain your choices you are attaching value, and demonstrating critical thinking skills.  This is where you can bring in your knowledge of social studies

Read and review the rubric for Writing Assignment Type I.

3. Conclusion

In this lesson you applied your understanding of free-market and command economies.  Free-market economies are based on competition and and self-reliance whereas command economies are planned and controlled by the government.

This lesson also taught you strategies and the format for completing assignment type 1 writing assignments.  Ideally when writing these types of assignments you have an introduction (identify the characteristics), a body (explain and support your choices), and a conclusion.  This will allow for development of organization and coherence.

You should write 1-2 pages maximum OR between 250 and 550 words.  This assignment is worth only 10% of your overall diploma.  Students who write more tend to create more errors or start to repeat themselves by the time they go beyond the 550 word count.
