Current Detailed Information of First Nations in Canada

First Nations Profile Interactive Map (click on title to be taken to the map)

interactive mapThis map provides the profiles of the most up-to-date information about the First Nations populations in Canada. It is an interactive map that allows you to click on a symbol and get information about the corresponding feature, including links to First Nation community websites. For example, if you click on the green dot just south of Edmonton a screen pops up and tells you detailed information about the reserve and it provides a link to the band website as well as the First Nations Profile. The second screenshot is the result of clicking on 'First Nation Profile'. Click on each blue bar and you will find further information about that particular population and their home. You can see the name of the chief and the councilors, the election system and their length of office. You can look up the population, the size of the reserve and the Federal funding. Some information is available through the National Census; however, this information can be limited due to a number of factors. This site is valuable in that it can give the researcher a sense of the number of First Nations populations as of the last census, the location, and detailed (not necessarily complete) information about the status of the population.
