Why learn about chronic conditions? Chronic conditions can impact many aspects of a person's life and can even lead to death. Of the following top ten causes of death in Canada in 2018 notice how many are caused by chronic conditions, marked in bold:

  1. Malignant neoplasms (Cancer)
  2. Diseases of the heart
  3. Cerebrovascular disease
  4. Accidents
  5. Chronic lower respiratory diseases
  6. Influenza and pneumonia
  7. Diabetes mellitus
  8. Alzheimer’s disease
  9. Intentional self-harm (suicide)
  10. Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis (kidney diseases)
