Section 3: Family Law-A Broader Perspective
You are probably very much aware of the fact that these days more and more couples are deciding simply to live together rather than to get married. You are likely also aware of the problem of abuse within families, and you may know of some of the services available to people with difficult family situations. But are you also aware of grandparents' problems in gaining access to their grandchildren if these children's parents get divorced? How about the debate over legally requiring people to support their elderly parents?
When you have finished this section you should be able to:
- explain the legal differences between marriage and cohabitation (living together as a couple),
- identify laws and services designed to protect people from abusive family situations, and
- describe some of the legal issues involving the extended family.
