Detention
First, it is important to distinguish between merely being
detained by the police and actually being arrested. As you saw in the
preceding lesson, the police have to go through four steps to arrest
you. The police are also limited in their right to arrest; as you have
seen, for example, an officer cannot arrest you if he or she catches you
about to commit a summary conviction offence - unless there is a
warrant out for you, that is.
- Detention: the act of keeping a person in custody.
