Unit 5 - Forest Research: Current Applications

Lesson 3: Harvesting Technologies

Harvesting Technology Research has demonstrated the negative effects of using heavy machinery on forest soils (example, reduces the effectiveness of reforestation.)

As the years have gone by, machinery has evolved to minimize these impacts. For example, using "higher flotation: machines that have wider tracks or lower pressure tires has reduced compaction and rutting of the soil.

In addition, many of the harvesting machines used in the forest industry today are significantly lighter than earlier models.
