Unit Two Introduction

How did society develop as a result of historical globalization and imperialism?

Through time, people around the world have become more connected to each other. They have shared ideas and resources and learned new ways of doing things. These connections have spread wealth and have allowed people to learn about one another. They have also put control of the world's riches into the hands of a few powerful people or countries, destroyed cultures, and harmed places and people.

The good and bad effects of globalization are still with us today.

About the issue question: You learned about globalization in the previous unit. But what is
imperialism
Domination by one or more countries over others in order to gain power and wealth. It can be take place through the use of weapons, economic control or political power by a powerful nation. Economic imperialism is when a powerful nation or a powerful corporation takes control of another country in order to make money for itself. Cultural imperialism takes place when a dominant culture overpowers another culture.
imperialism? Canadian society developed because of imperialism. That has had an impact on Canadian society, Canada's First Nations and Inuit people, and immigrants to Canada. In fact, imperialism shaped today's world.

Important issues are often complex issues. The present world did not just happen by chance. It developed by the deliberate actions of people, businesses, organizations, and governments. Their actions created the world we live in today. Some of these actions were based on ignorance and lack of understanding. Some actions were taken selfishly without thought of others or what people today believe are the fundamental rights of all human beings. These actions had both negative and positive effects.

A poet, George Santayana, said, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."By trying to understand the past, we can make a better future for everyone.
