We
are surrounded by the media. Perhaps without even being aware of it,
we know quite a bit about media and are able to classify much of what we
see and hear into various categories (genres).
This
ability to classify media is important as we are able to make better
choices as to what type of media we find most entertaining, and we are
also aware of the sort of expectations we have when we watch or read
material from different genres.
For example, we know that a romantic
comedy may include some of the humourous events that might happen when a
couple is dating, while a talk show about dating might offer useful — or not so useful — suggestions for developing relationships with new
people.
In the activity that follows, you will match movies or TV shows with the genres they represent.
