Review the following practices that promote children’s language:
Concept 1: Use language that is clear and grammatically correct.
Concept 2: Listen to the children and be at their level and in eye contact when possible.
Concept 3: Allow the children a few seconds to respond; take turns talking and listening.
Concept 4: Expand on and/or extend the child’s language. Repeat sounds that an infant makes.
Concept 5: Repeat back to the child, in a casual, non-judgemental way, any words that were mispronounced or were grammatically incorrect.
Concept 6: Ask open-ended questions that encourage children to talk.
Concept 7: Provide children with many varied experiences so they will have something to talk about.
Concept 8: Show children that it is fun to talk and listen.
Concept 9: Accept each child as unique and special.
