Procedure

Step 1: Measure the mass of the shelled nut (pecan).

Step 2: Bend a paper clip so that it forms a stand that will support the nut above the lab bench.

Step 3: Place 50 mL of tap water in the tin can.

Step 4: Measure the temperature of the water in the can.

Step 5: Suspend the can of water inside the ring and above the nut by putting  a pencil through the holes and under the rim of the can.

Step 6: Using a flame, light the nut.

Step 7: Position the can containing the water above the burning nut.

Step 8: When the nut has finished burning, measure the final temperature of the water in the can.
