Session 3: Observing Young Children

Scenario: Lunch

It’s Wednesday again—soup and sandwich day. K (age two years) is the first to the table and is demanding, “Me, me, me now!”

The child care provider pours hot soup into the children’s bowls, but keeps the bowls away from the children so the soup can cool. While passing the plate of sandwiches to T (age four years), the child care provider catches a glimpse of K, who has crawled from the chair onto the table and is trying to pull a bowl of soup toward herself. In the process, several bowls tip over and soup is everywhere! K bursts into tears and loud wails follow.
