Session 1: Social-Emotional Development

LEARNING ACTIVITY 1: PROMOTING POSITIVE SELF-ESTEEM

Billy and Maria

Billy is four-and-a-half years old. He and Sasha spend a lot of time at the creative art table. They decide they want to paint a picture at the easel, but there is no paper left. Billy tries to ask Maria, the child care provider, for more paper, but she is busy with another group of children.

Billy looks around the room and sees some paper, which is being temporarily stored on a shelf above his head. He puts a chair beside the shelf, climbs on the chair, and reaches for the paper. He takes the bottom piece in both hands and pulls as hard as he can. The whole stack of paper topples down on him. Maria quickly runs to his rescue and yells, “What are you doing touching the paper on this shelf? You could have hurt yourself. Look at the mess you have made! If you want paper, ask me and I’ll get it for you.”
