Session 1: Social-Emotional Development

LEARNING ACTIVITY 1: PROMOTING POSITIVE SELF-ESTEEM

Scenario 2

Three five-year-old children are busy putting on costumes in the dress-up centre. Salim, the child care provider, is standing by the block corner watching other children build towers and castles. All of the children in the room seem thoroughly involved in separate projects and are paying little attention to one other.

Ÿouseff, who has dressed up as a train conductor, turns with excitement to show Salim his outfit. As Ÿouseff runs to Salim, he stumbles into the castle of blocks that Georgina has made. As her castle crumbles, Georgina gets very angry, cries, and hits Ÿouseff. She shouts, “I hate you!” Salim comforts Georgina saying, “You look angry because Ÿouseff knocked down your beautiful castle. Ÿouseff, Georgina is sad that her castle was knocked down. Let’s help her build another one, and then we can look at your costume.”

After rebuilding the castle, Salim moves to the side with Ÿouseff to look at his costume. After Ÿouseff explains all the parts of his train conductor’s outfit, Salim says, “I really like the hat you’re wearing.” Ÿouseff smiles and Salim continues, “Thank you for showing me your costume. Remember, it is safer to walk than run when you want to show me something.”
