Viewed from above, the couch is a rectangle. Calculate the area of this top view.

 

This illustration shows that the top view of the couch is a rectangle.

 

Viewed from the front, the couch is another rectangle. Find its area and double the area, as the rear view is an identical rectangle.

 

This illustration shows that the front view of couch is a rectangle.

 

Viewed from the side, the couch is L-shaped. This shape can be broken into two rectangles. Star will have to double the area of this shape, because there are two sides—left and right.

 

This illustration shows that a couch viewed from the side is an L-shape.

 

And finally, the inside of each of the two arms is a rectangle.

 

This illustration shows that a couch arm, viewed from the inside, is a rectangle.

 

total area of fabric required = (area of top view) + (2 × area of front view) + (2 × area of side view) + (2 × area of inside arm)
