From Try This 1 and Try This 2, you should have noticed that quadrilaterals can be classified according to the properties of the quadrilateral.

 

Square This is an illustration of a square.

  • Diagonals are equal in length.
  • Diagonals intersect at 90°.
Rectangle This is an illustration of a rectangle.

Some quadrilaterals can be classified as more than one specific type of quadrilateral. For example, a square is a rhombus, but a rhombus is not a square because every angle in a square must be equal to 90°. Another example involves the rectangle. A rectangle is a parallelogram, but a parallelogram is not a rectangle because every angle in a rectangle must be equal to 90°.
