Session 2: Communicating Effectively

Communicating effectively with children, parents, and staff is essential to providing quality care. Active listening is an important way to understand and support children. Understanding your own communication style and learning to identify and reduce barriers to effective communication enhances your professionalism as a child care provider of young children.
Getting Focused Activity: How Good Are My Listening Skills?
Focus
If you really know how to listen, you have mastered 80% of the gift of good communication. In this activity you will have an opportunity to learn about your listening skills.
Directions
Step 1: Listen to the “Listening Test Audio Recording.”
Step 2: Check your listening skills by answering the following questions and then checking your answers.
- What word was used to describe Goldilocks’ hair?
- What did Baby Bear say after saying, “Someone’s been eating my porridge”?
- At the end of the story, did Papa Bear yell or shout, “Bye”?
- At the end of the story, how many times did Baby Bear say the word, “Bye”?
Check your work in the Appendix.
Step 3: Complete Getting Focused Activity: How Good Are My Listening Skills?
